As we embrace the top haircut trends for 2025, it’s crucial to be aware of common mistakes that can occur with each style. Here are the top five trends and the pitfalls to avoid when creating these looks.
- Cropped Textured Fringes and ‘Birkin’ Bangs
Fringes, bangs or whatever you call them are a favourite when it comes to face framing, but they can go horribly wrong without sticking to some very important guidelines
Common Mistake: Taking your section too far back and too wide on the face
Solution: Use the eye as a guide, and create a triangle where the corners are directly in line with the edge of the eye. Be sure not to mistake this for the edge of the eyebrow – which will make the hair swing around the head creating that ‘ verandah fringe ‘ which is not a vibe.
- The Perfect Bob
The perfect bob is tailored to the wearers hair texture, bone structure and lifestyle.
Common Mistake: Choosing the wrong technique to add texture or remove weight.
Solution: Ask yourself, what is the reason I am adding texture? Is it to remove weight? Or to create volume? It is a common mistake that layering will remove weight from your hairstyle, and while this is true for the amount of hair on your head, The purpose of external layers is to “explode” a shape, making it appear bigger and more voluminous than before. If your goal is to texture and remove weight from a bob, opt for an internal layer instead.
- Long layers / ‘the 90’s supermodel’ –
Common Mistake: Cutting the layers too short and running out of hair to blend. You start cutting your layers from the back of the head, and as move to the front of the head, the last layers are far shorter than you’ve anticipated – We’ve all been there!
Solution: Cut the focal point of your butterfly cut first – (fringe, curtain bangs, faceframe) and build your layering from there. This way you will always have control over the length of your shortest layer.
4. Shag
Common Mistake: Creating a masculine “mullet”
Solution: Choose a combination of layering techniques that together will flatter the clients head shape and create a feminine ‘question mark’ shaped silhouette, Avoid a square layer or increase layer on a feminine haircut as sharp corners create a masculine shape.
- Pixie Cut
Common Mistake: Talking your clients out a haircut because you’re too scared!
Solution: a pixie cut is just like any other haircut, leaving a clients hair too long is just as much of a redo as it is cutting it too short or toning it the wring colour. Pixie cuts will always look feminine if you apply the same rules for a “question mark’ shape as you did in the “shag haircut” and avoid defaulting to a ‘short back and sides’ square layering shape.
By being aware of these common mistakes and taking steps to avoid them, you can ensure that your clients leave the salon with a flawless haircut they love not only when they leave the salon, but one they can replicate every day at home! The most common reason a client will break up with their hairdresser is because they not offered a change or a hairdresser tries to talk them out of what they want – Mastering these techniques will give the confidence to execute any hairstyle but also keep your clients coming back for more.
